Get creative

Your beach house needn’t be a constant source of stress and time-consuming maintenance. See it as a long-term creative project that seeks to restore the natural habitat and provide your family with a beautiful, hassle-free garden to enjoy in your downtime.

Rather than arriving at the beach house and having to pull out dead plants, revive yellow grass, or mow and trim, spend your gardening time getting creative. Add interesting walkways, innovate water-collection methods and get to you know your area’s flora with each visit.

We teamed up with Willie Schmidt at his stunning Jacobsbaai house, and created a fabulous, water-wise, living dining table. We’ve outlined the steps below in case you would like to make this your next beach house project.

Instead of buying an outdoor table, why not get creative and make your own? This example is fairly easy to make and provides a space for you to plant whatever you like. You could plant herbs, so that guests can break off their own herbs for garnish. Of course, if you decide to go the water-wise, low maintenance route, succulents, cacti and aloes are a great choice!

What you will need:

2 x wooden pallets
16 x washers (6mm)
16 x coach screws (6 x 30 mm)
Plastic planter
4 x trolley wheels
Wood screws:
4.0 x 75mm (Packet) 4.0 x 50mm (Packet)
3.5 x 16mm (Packet) 4.5 x 40mm (Packet)

Tools:

Tape measure, claw hammer, wood saw, sander, socket wrench (10mm), socket drill
Drill bits: 3.0 mm, 3.5 mm, 2.0 mm, 4.0 mm
